A space where teens feel safe, seen, and understood
The teenage years can feel big, messy, and overwhelming at times.
There’s so much happening all at once -friendships, school pressure, identity, family changes, and the pressure to “have it all together.”
For many young people, this can show up as anxiety, low self-worth, shutdown, anger, withdrawal, or feeling like they just don’t quite fit.
At Coastal Counselling Walk & Talk Therapy, I offer gentle, down-to-earth counselling for teens across the Northern Rivers including Ballina, Brunswick Heads, Kingscliff and surrounding areas.
My focus is simple:
Helping teens feel safe enough to talk, move at their own pace, and reconnect with themselves.
Understanding what your teen might be experiencing
Teen years are a time of rapid development -not just emotionally, but also in the brain and nervous system.
During adolescence, the brain is still learning how to regulate emotions, manage stress, and make sense of complex social situations. This can mean feelings are experienced more intensely, and coping can feel harder than it “should.”
At the same time, self-worth is often being shaped by friendships, social media, school expectations, and comparison. Even small challenges can feel very big.
It’s also common for anxiety to show up during this stage of life, especially when teens are trying to meet expectations while also figuring out who they are.
When grief, loss, separation, or big life changes are added into the mix, it can feel even more overwhelming - particularly if a young person doesn’t yet have the words or support to express what they’re going through.
This is where counselling can help: not by “fixing” your teen, but by giving them tools, understanding, and a safe space to process what’s happening internally.

How I support teenagers
I support teens navigating:
Anxiety and overwhelm
Low self-esteem and self-worth
Friendship and social challenges
School stress or school refusal
Grief and loss
Family separation or change
Identity questions and life transitions
Emotional regulation difficulties
Every teen is different, so I meet them exactly where they are - no pressure, no judgement, no expectations to “perform” in session.
A different kind of counselling experience
Many teens find it easier to open up when they’re not sitting face-to-face in a formal room.
That’s why I offer flexible ways to connect:
Walk & Talk Therapy
Outdoor sessions in nature around Brunswick Heads, Ballina, Lennox Head and surrounding Northern Rivers areas.
Movement, fresh air, and side-by-side conversation often make it easier for teens to talk without pressure.
Outdoor Seated sessions
A calm, relaxed space for teens who prefer something more traditional and contained.
Online counselling
A flexible option for teens in Kingscliff, Tweed Heads and beyond, or for those who feel safer starting from home.
My approach
I use an eclectic, person-centred approach, drawing from:
Mindfulness
Nervous system regulation
Somatic (body-based) awareness
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy)
Solution-focused strategies
This means sessions are always tailored - not rigid or formula-based.
We focus on what’s happening for your teen right now, and gently build tools that actually fit their real life.
What counselling can help your teen with
Over time, counselling can support your teen to:
Understand and manage anxiety
Build self-worth and confidence
Feel more emotionally steady and regulated
Communicate feelings more safely
Navigate grief and change
Improve relationships and social confidence
Develop coping strategies they can actually use day-to-day
The aim isn’t perfection - it’s helping them feel:
“I can handle what I’m feeling, and I’m not alone in it.”
A note for parents and caregivers
Reaching out for support for your teen can feel like a big step, especially when you’re already doing your best to support them.
I hold sessions in a way that respects your teen’s privacy and autonomy, while also keeping you gently included where appropriate. Building trust with your teen is often what allows real change to happen.
You don’t have to navigate this alone.
