Rest Isn’t Lazy: Why Slowing Down is Sometimes the Most Productive Thing You Can Do
In a world that praises hustle, being busy can feel like a badge of honour. But what if the most powerful step you can take this month is… slowing down?
At Coastal Counselling Walk and Talk Therapy, we often meet people who feel overwhelmed, burned out, or simply out of rhythm with themselves. They’re trying so hard to keep up that they’ve forgotten how to tune in. If that sounds familiar, this is your gentle reminder: rest isn’t lazy. It’s necessary.
The Pressure to Push Through
Many of us are taught from a young age to "keep going" no matter what. But constantly pushing through exhaustion, stress, or emotional strain comes at a cost. Our bodies whisper, then shout, when they need pause. Emotional fatigue, physical tension, and even illness can surface when we ignore the signs.
When we rest, we allow space for recovery, reflection, and reconnection.
What Rest Really Looks Like
Rest doesn’t always mean lying in bed or doing nothing (although it can!). Sometimes rest is:
Turning your phone off for a few hours.
Saying no to something, even if you feel guilty.
Taking a slow walk without a destination.
Letting yourself cry, journal, or just be.
Sitting by the ocean or under a tree without needing to “figure it all out.”
These moments matter. They restore our nervous system and bring us back to ourselves.
Rest in Therapy
In our walk and talk sessions, rest often looks like pausing to notice. Noticing the breeze. The sound of birds. The feeling of feet on the ground. We invite clients to slow their breath, speak at their own pace, or even enjoy moments of quiet in between conversations. These natural pauses are not empty—they're deeply restorative.
Therapy doesn’t have to be hard or confronting to be powerful. Sometimes the greatest healing happens in the softness.
How to Honour Your Need for Rest
Here are three ways to start honouring rest this month:
Practice saying “Not right now.” You don’t need to be everything to everyone. Your energy is valuable.
Create pockets of stillness. Whether it’s 5 minutes of deep breathing or a quiet cuppa in the sun, small moments matter.
Listen inward. What does your body need today? What feels nourishing instead of depleting?
Final Thoughts
Rest isn’t about giving up. It’s about tuning in, slowing down, and allowing yourself to come back to life with more clarity and intention. At Coastal Counselling Walk and Talk Therapy, Im here to walk beside you—at your pace. Whether you’re ready to talk, breathe, cry, or just be—you’re welcome here.
You don’t need to do more to be worthy of care.
You already are.
