When You Know Something Needs to Change, But You Don’t Know What Comes Next

Sometimes there isn’t one big thing that has gone wrong.

You may simply have reached a point where you know something doesn’t feel right anymore.

Perhaps you’re feeling more anxious than usual, questioning yourself, struggling with your confidence, or feeling disconnected from the person you used to be. Maybe you’ve experienced a loss, your circumstances have changed, or you’re entering a new stage of life and aren’t quite sure where you fit anymore.

You might find yourself thinking:

“I don’t know what I need. I just know I can’t keep feeling like this.”

This is often where counselling can help.

You don’t have to have everything figured out

One of the misconceptions about counselling is that you need to know exactly what is wrong before you make an appointment.

You don’t.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply recognising that you’re struggling.

You might be functioning on the outside - going to work, looking after your family, keeping up with everyday life - while internally feeling overwhelmed, uncertain or emotionally exhausted.

You may be constantly thinking about what you should be doing, questioning your decisions or comparing yourself to other people.

Over time, this can affect how you see yourself.

When anxiety starts influencing your decisions

Anxiety isn’t always obvious.

It can look like overthinking conversations, worrying about what other people think, constantly second-guessing yourself or finding it difficult to make decisions.

You might avoid things because they feel uncomfortable, or say yes when you really want to say no.

Sometimes anxiety becomes so familiar that you stop questioning it.

You simply organise your life around avoiding the things that make you uncomfortable.

Counselling can provide a space to understand what is happening beneath the anxiety and begin developing ways to respond differently.

When your self-worth has taken a hit

There can be times in life when your confidence quietly disappears.

A relationship ending, becoming a parent, changing careers, experiencing loss, burnout or simply moving into a different stage of life can change the way you see yourself.

You may start questioning:

Who am I now?

What do I actually want?

Why don't I feel like myself anymore?

Am I doing enough?

Why does everyone else seem to have it together?

Rebuilding self-worth isn’t about becoming a completely different person.

It can be about reconnecting with yourself, understanding your needs and learning to treat yourself with greater kindness and acceptance.

Grief isn't only about losing a person

Grief can follow many different kinds of loss.

It can come after the death of someone you love, but it can also follow the end of a relationship, a change in family circumstances, losing a role or identity, leaving a place you loved, or realising that life isn't going to look the way you once imagined.

Sometimes you can be grieving something that other people don't even recognise as a loss.

That can make it particularly difficult to talk about.

There is no single way grief should look, and there is no set timeline for when you should feel “better”.

Counselling can offer somewhere to acknowledge the loss without needing to minimise it or rush through it.

Life transitions can leave you feeling unsettled

Some of the biggest changes in our lives are also the ones we choose.

Starting something new, changing direction, children growing older, returning to work, ending a relationship or simply reaching a point where you want something different can all bring uncertainty.

Even positive change can feel uncomfortable.

You can be grateful for your life and still feel lost.

You can love your family and still wonder what you want for yourself.

You can know that a change is necessary and still be scared of what comes next.

These contradictions are part of being human.

You don't need to wait until things become overwhelming

Counselling doesn't have to be about reaching breaking point.

It can simply be a place to pause.

A place to step outside the noise of everyday life and talk honestly about what is going on for you.

At Coastal Counselling Walk & Talk Therapy, sessions are designed to feel natural and conversational. Rather than sitting across from someone in a traditional office, we can walk, talk and connect in a calm outdoor environment.

For some people, being able to move while they talk makes opening up feel easier and more natural.

There is no expectation that you arrive with all the answers.

We can start with where you are.

You don't have to know exactly what you need

If you have been feeling anxious, disconnected from yourself, struggling with your self-worth, navigating grief or wondering what comes next in your life, counselling may provide the space you need to work through it.

You don't have to have a diagnosis.

You don't have to know exactly what to say.

And you don't have to figure everything out before reaching out.

Sometimes the first step is simply having somewhere safe to start.

Coastal Counselling Walk & Talk Therapy provides counselling for adults and older teens across the Northern Rivers, including Ballina, Lennox Head, Brunswick Heads, New Brighton and Kingscliff, with walk-and-talk, online and in-home sessions available.

If you feel ready to explore what has been going on for you, you can get in touch to arrange a session.

You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need somewhere to begin.
